Jankovic, Djokovic Survive

Jelena Jankovic had a tough time against Simona Halep of Romain in the first round at the US Open. Pushed to three sets and with Halep serving for the match, Jankovic broke serve and went on to win 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Jarmila Groth pushed Maria Sharapova to three sets before Sharapova closed Groth out 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Kateryna Bondarenko scored the first big upset on the women's side with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over eighth seeded Li Na. Former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Kimiko Date Krumm 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Maria Kirilenko beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 7-5, 6-4. Mirjana Lucic beat Alicia Molik 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 and will face Jankovic in the second round. Agnieszka Radwanska beat Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-4, 6-3.

Novak Djokovic suffered through the heat and Viktor Troicki but completed a comeback win 6-3 3-6 2-6 7-5 6-3. Arnuad Clement upset 16th seeded Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 2-6, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
